Developers and business

Developers are bad in business questions if they work for a company. However they become much better in business if they become freelancers. Freelancers have to think about technical skills and selling their services while company developers do not have to bother with selling at all and mildly interested in improving their skills (it does not directly correspond to their income).

Conclusion: a typical freelance developer should be better than a typical company developer.

  1. I think it depends on the developer and the size of the company.

  2. In a company lot can be done to motivate developers to become better in their skills and many companies do it well. A freelancer might often find himself olone with his problems and sometimes it's hard to see perspective in all this, it's not an easy thing to deal with and can end up in frustration that would normally be shared off in a daily company work. Open communities can be a real blessing here :)

But I agree, doing things on own hand often develops useful business skills, everybody should try it at least once. Even if one knows it's really not for him.
