rsnapshot, anyone?

Recently I came across rsnapshot as a backup solution that can do hourly, daily and monthly backups. I am interested in any experience but it is hard to find except for this.

Does anybody have experience with it?

  1. I'm using it for many years now to create backups of some servers. Before I used rsnapshot, I used to setup the rsync jobs and the backup rotation manually. With rsnapshot, you just setup the jobs and everything runs smoothly. One of the main advantages it the use of hardlinks, which saves a lot of diskspace compared to traditional rsync backups to different folders.

In order to monitor failed rsnapshot jobs, I created a simple script for logwatch, which outputs errors from the rsnapshot log to the daily logwatch email from the server where rsnapshot runs.

If you have several servers to backup by rsync, I can really recommend rsnapshot, since it comes with everything you (or at least I) need.

    1. Thanks, very useful information for me!

But hard links are local-only, right? If I want to backup to a remote host, will they work?

  2. Yes it works, very good!

We use rsnapshot to backup all datas monthy, weekly and daily and then we sync it to an offsite backup server via rsync. We triggering the jobs with jenkins.

With rsnapshot you save disk amount and it is fast.
Sync to remote via rsync is also a good solution.

command for rsync with remote host:
    sudo rsync -vaz -H --delete --numeric-ids /your/path/rsnapshot/ user@offsite.server:/your/path/

Contact we if you need help!
